What is a Kōkua membership?

The word kokua is often defined as "help," but at a deeper level signifies the concept of mutual support and cooperation without the expectation of personal gain. Our team at Aloha Rock Gym knows that climbing is powerful—but it becomes truly transformative when shared with others.


The Kokua Membership is a way for you to share climbing with those who need it the most, and that’s why we’re partnering with Imua Family Services (see RAK) and MEO Youth Services to ensure that under-served and at-risk youth across the island have open, welcoming access to the gym. Whether the barriers are financial, transportation-related, emotional, or physical, we’re committed to breaking them down. We believe everyone deserves to climb.


Our Kokua program and its membership is a simple way to give back while doing what you love: climbing, connecting, and supporting our island community. For only $10 more per week, you can make an outsized impact in the life of under-served boys and girls on Maui by ensuring they have access to climbing, no matter the difficulties in their lives and households. We are honored to partner with some of the best non-profit partners on Maui to maximize impact.

  • If you're on a budget and looking to get started, we recommend a Weekly billing membership option.
  • If you want to support the under-served and at-risk youth community on Maui, the Kokua Weekly membership is only $10 additional per week.
  • If you're looking for the biggest dollar savings and awesome additional perks, we recommend an Annual pass (either Kokua or Standard).

A week ago we got to have family and close friends in the gym to test out the walls and get some early feedback. The feedback was invaluable (the walls feel TALL, and the routes are FUN!), but watching everyone connect and have fun in this space, that has been “in progress” for so long, was ✨priceless✨ It truly was a pinch me moment for the whole team and had us buzzing since and pushing harder to cross our t’s and dot our i’s so we can have ALL of you in here climbing with us. Construction update! 🚨 Yes- we are still under construction! We’re so grateful to be setting routes even while the rest of the gym is being built out. It’s definitely been a bit of a juggling act 😅 - we’ve moved the same box of holds more times than we can count just to make space. But every shuffle brings us closer to the gym being open, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

It’s really happening—routesetting has begun! It almost doesn’t feel real. Once the @walltopia crew installed the mats it transformed this space from a commercial construction zone to a *climbing gym.* The climbing walls are now 100% finished and our setting team is quickly filling out the sport corridor with fun and beautiful routes that we are so excited to see you guys climb. Wow! Just like that, nearly 9,000 square feet of climbing walls are built! The crew from @Walltopia cranked these out faster than we could even get a video up 🤣 It took just under 25 days to raise these walls, but it represents four years of sweat, stoke, tears, and love. Our dream of bringing a world-class climbing gym to Maui has always been fueled by the vision of creating a special, tight-knit community space that is welcoming and inspiring. That vision has guided us to meticulously design and develop every angle of these walls, allowed us to overcome every obstacle over so many years, and problem solve construction challenges we never could have imagined. They’re currently somewhere between Oakland, CA and Maui, due to arrive around July 9th! 🎉 We also have 2 additional containers of flooring, climbing holds, and volumes set to arrive a few weeks later. Our wall builder, Walltopia, is an industry leader and the largest climbing wall manufacturer globally. We’re so excited to bring high-quality climbing walls to Maui and can’t wait for you to see the design!! June Construction Update Part 1: 🎉 The outside of the building is now mostly complete! You’ve seen them working from the highway and Costco but here’s a closer look. What a great day partnering with @malama_maui_nui and @pauwelabeverage out at Ukumehame for some much needed trash removal! A huge thank you to everyone that came out. We were floored when we saw how much there is left to do, especially since MMN has been crushing it and already removed so much. Unfortunately there was a lot of trash at the base of a historic heiau - fortunately we were able to remove much of it. Thank you Pauwela Beverage for supplying us with some beautifully crafted drinks that were a great pick me up and cool down after getting our hands dirty! Wednesday March 12th we’re partnering with Mālama Maui Nui and Pauwela Beverage Co. to help clean up the area in Ukumehame/Olowalu that’s been used as a dumping ground. Over 150 cars, lots of large appliances and other random trash has already been removed but there is still plenty that needs to go! Many hands make light work! It’s been 3 months since the catastrophic Maui wildfires of August 2023. Our hearts remain heavy feeling for all the lives lost, devastated, and irrevocably altered ❤️‍🩹 But our hearts are also filled with immense gratitude for all the people around the world who chose to rally together in an outpouring of compassion 🙏 When we issued a call to action and launched the Global Climbing Community Fund for Maui Fire Victims, we didn’t know what to expect 🤷‍♀️ Now, it’s clear the climbing community answered that call. We want to extend a massive shout out, MAHALO, and THANK YOU to everyone who helped us raise $15,000+ for the @hawaiicommunityfoundation MAUI STRONG Fund and spread global awareness about Maui’s disaster response needs. And it doesn’t end there — there are countless others that provided support outside of this fundraiser, including two of the largest outdoor and climbing equipment brands that we spoke with who were willing to create their own internal fundraisers and match all employee donations in significant amounts. I’ve kept past updates short and sweet because I know everyone is busy and, frankly, the last thing most of us want to do is read a long blog post. This time, however, I want to elaborate a bit on what went into the design of Aloha Rock Gym and, believe it or not, the story begins in 1977 when I got busted for playing floor hockey in the school bathroom with a metal puck we’d unscrewed from a urinal.
